Friday Meeting Show Table: Crassulaceae

Our member's table show category this Friday night will be plants from the family of Crassulaceae. Also known as the crassulas, the stonecrops or the orpine family, are a diverse family of flowering plants primarily characterised by succulent leaves and a form of photosynthesis known as crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM).

Plants of this family that exhibit CAM), have evolved as an adaptation to arid conditions that allow a plant to photosynthesise during the day, but only exchange gases (e.g. CO2) at night.

This family includes 1,800 species and up to 40 generas. Members of the Crassulaceae are found worldwide, though are mostly concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Africa (where most species are found).

Crassula, Sempervivum, Orostachys, Kalnchoe, Coteyledon, Aeonium, Monanthes, Bryophyllum, Echeveria (and their hyrbids), Pachyphytum, Sedum and Dudleyas to name a few!
